This cardigan is worked in one piece from the bottom up, then divided to create fonts and back, at the armhole. The stitches for the shoulder saddles are cast on separately, worked to the length of the shoulder, then joined as you pick up stitches around the armhole, allowing you to shape the sleeve cap and knit the sleeves from the top down. The saddles are seamed to the shoulder, then the front and neck bands are picked up and worked, to finish the garment.

Seaming is only required to attach the saddles to the shoulders. Creating the shoulder saddles separately and sewing these short seams creates a well-structured shoulder that gives stability to the wide neckline.
