Double knitting may sound daunting, but it's a lot like working ribbing, and once you get the hang of it, you may appreciate how much easier it is to work than complex colorwork. Because you are always working with both colors every two stitches, this method is perfect for stitch patterns that would otherwise require managing long floats or working in intarsia. The final fabric is much more elastic, evenly tensioned, and reversible, too.

A worsted weight cowl is a great project to try this fun technique.

Sizes

Red version: 17.25" / 44 cm circumference, 7.25" / 18.5 cm tall
Blue version: 23" / 58.5 cm circumference, 8 1/2" / 21.5 cm tall

Supplies

  • US 7 / 4.5 mm circular knitting needle, in preferred style for
small circumference knitting in the round. *
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking supplies
* Or size to obtain gauge

Gauge

16.5 sts x 30 rows over 4" / 10 cm for Red Version
16.5 sts x 26 rows over 4" / 10 cm for Blue Version

Note: gauge is approximated here and is not instrumental to the success of this cowl but may impact the finished size and yardage required for your piece. Because of variances in yarn content and twist, row gauge may vary, even if you match stitch gauge, as is evident in these two samples. In general, yarns with more wool and more twist will produce a more compact final fabric.
