Lacking the requisite fear for survival

Well, it was another truly lovely weekend here in Portland. At some point, am I supposed to stop liking this place? It hasn't happened yet. There just always seems to be something fun to do

On Friday,we celebrated Larry and Erica's 1st wedding anniversary. Their 12th (going steady?) anniversary is in May. This means that I must joke that they are newlyweds all night, because that never gets old.

When Leo and I arrived at the restaurant, Erica and Larry were well into their celebration. We agreed that all of us (except Erica) would have some super hot oyster shooters. Yum but with a long and painful burn. Leo, he of little forethought, ordered two for himself and realized the second would only add to his current level of pain.

On Sunday, we went back to Cannon Beach to give Panda some much needed running around. We go for walks during the week, but nothing takes the place of running around the beach for a few hours. This is also when we get to the part of the story where I explain the title, but before we go there, I must show the obligatory scenic shots. To save load time on the home page, all the pictures are in the extended entry, after the jump.

Abandoned on the shore; muscle shells, a branch, a jellyfish, and a closeup of foam.

Some most excellent catches while playing fetch. My new camera does an even better job of catching Panda in action.

While walking down the beach, Leo suggested that he and Panda climb this beautiful rock so I could take their picture. Don't they look as cute as can be up there?

This next image illustrates Panda's route from the top of the rock back down to the ground.

Both of us had looked away for a moment, Leo turned just in time to see Panda push off into the air and I turned around when I heard a thud and grunt from the spindly legged girl I love so much. Both of us stood gape jawed as Panda shook off the impact and proceeded to run around the beach some more. If you haven't clicked that image, please do so, I've thrown in some approximate calculations of the distance she jumped, estimating it to be 6 to 7 times her height.

That sound you just heard was my head exploding.

The whole event was obviously more traumatic for us than for her, but we packed up and headed for the car, nonetheless. Best not to push our luck. On our way home, we stopped off at a scenic point and took some pictures of a huge moss covered tree.

After that we made our way home and we had a deliciously long nap together.

Ouch...those poor little paws! That makes my feet hurt just thinking about it! Sounds like a wonderful weekend. :-)

I am so jealous, I would love to get my doggy on the beach, too. Your pics are great of the shoreline treasures, what great colors, wouldn't it be nice to see them in a sock?

Zendi:

I love the pictures. Panda is crazy and a true adventurer... She reminds me a song my mother used to sing to me in spanish "osito Panda, adonda andas." Keep taking those great pictures.

You sure look like you are having a REALLY good time. Lucky Panda-the high jumper.

Oh my, that made my stomach drop just thinking about Panda jumping down from that high! Oregon looks like an incredible state, I hope we can go there someday! Beautiful pictures and I love your modified picture showing how high that cliff was in panda units :)

Yark! Your heart must have been in your throat! Glad to hear everything is fine with Panda.

Whew--I'm glad Panda's okay. Crazy dog. ;)

Aaah! Crazy dog! What was she thinking? My doggie Thisby did a similar stunt last week. I went inside the school to pick up my kids, leaving the windows of my van cracked for Thisby. She managed to SOMEHOW squeeze out and dropped to the ground--a fall of about five feet. She's not that big! It's easily 5 times higher than she is!

Dogs and kids--it's like they're on a mission to kill us with anxiety.

Jump, Panda, jump!

Love, Z

OMFG...i think i would still be having a hard time breathing...a week after i fell down our very scary stairs i had to watch and not be able to do anything as my emory fell from about half way up...i tell you it scared me more when she fell(although i hurt myself more) she was fine but she did get to go to work with me because i was afraid to leave her at home...

Oh, the picture with the calculations is hilarious. Panda the Super Dog!

Sounds like a really awesome weekend!

Sounds like Panda is a bit of a daredevil...has she ever tried to fly before yesterday?

Ah the dogs, they be crazy!
I'm glad that Panda is none the worse for wear. I'll never forget the time my dearly departed Geno just walked off a deck that was about 18 feet off the ground. He yelled a lot after he landed, but since he was barely 6 pounds, the impact didn't do any damage. I died a thousand deaths, though.

Okay, I love the photo with approximate height calculatios, but- Oh my heart! How long did it take until you regained consciousness?? Glad the girlie was okay- and you two, as well! ;)

EEEK! What, is she part lemming?? I would have had a heart attack right there on the spot. Thank goodness she's okay.

One of our dogs would probably do the same thing - I used to theorize that he was suicidal, but now I think he's just not very bright...if he decides he'd like to be somewhere else, he tends to take the least sensical and most dangerous route to whatever that place might be.

(But....the picture's pretty dang funny.)

Ay! Tahoe did something very similar as a puppy, only I watched it happening and was too far away to stop him. It was definitely one of those vomit-laugh-cry-with-relief moments in memory.

I'm glad the Panda's oka--great pics by the way, and nice visual aid. ;)
